Toronto has to play a complete game for their playoff lives and reputations.

Jozy’s back. So is Sebastian. Does it mean a return of a productive flank attacking and midfield magic for Toronto? Even with these players, the Reds had 71% of their shot were inside the box against Columbus.

The Crew defensive midfielder Artur steadied a poor performance from Frederico Higuain and Justin Meram. The defensive midfielder is out on a yellow card accumulation.

Mohammed Abu is experienced. He had 20 appearances with 14 starts this season. Will his demotion to the bench be shown through the underperformance of Higuain and Meram?

It’s as you were with Giovinco and Altidore returning. At BMO Field, the excitement will motivate the Reds to remind MLS supporters why some believe their one best team in the MLS, ever.

Toronto still got deep into the Crew defensive third playing a 4-1-4-1 lineup. A probable switch back to their 3-5-2 formation will make the Reds more comfortable.

Toronto has given up 1.09 goals a game in the playoffs. The Reds have put in two goals per game in their last four matches. The Canadian Club must play a complete game; score...

Sky Blue In No Direction

Can a New Manager make Sky Blue Eternal or Falling?

Christy Holly left his managerial duties for Sky Blue FC in August this year. It was a mutual agreement. Someone had to do the pushing or pulling in Holly’s departure.

By pushing or pulling for victories and draws, New Jersey could excite you their counterattacking and baffle you with their ball watching defense. Holly, a former assistant to Jim Gabarra, couldn’t implement his philosophy without an easy goal being scored.

The May 27th match against Orlando was a 2-1 victory for Sky Blue. Their defensive mental lapse occurred in the box by Marta’s pass to Camila Martins Pereira who assisted on a Jasmyne Spenser goal.

Sky Blue attacked the left side when the offense wasn't generated by route one soccer. A tidy series of through balls would move Sky Blue into the attacking third. The main option against the Pride was to pressure Orlando in the middle for a counterattack.

The pressure worked. A Daphne Corboz dispossession and pass led to a Samantha Kerr goal on the left side. The Pride strategy of high tempo possession was disrupted by Sky Blue’s high press to...

These Players Must Produce fo National Team Depth and Hopefully Stardom

The players on the 22 women roster have to fill a need. The United States Women’s manager Jill Ellis is looking for speed down the flanks. NWSL superstars like Lynn Williams are making contributions to the senior team.

The women listed below are either NWSL emerging stars or promising youngsters with potential to be world class. They are not fairy tale stories. These players had played on the youth national teams and one played for another senior team.

Sofia Huerta- Midfielder, Chicago Red Stars

Sofia was signed by Chicago to be a number 10. Her vision and goal scoring capabilities make her a threat as a right back. Huerta has been playing that position for the Red Stars effectively.

National teams are learning to outrun the US instead of matching strength for strength. Sofia’s ability to create from defense to offense will make opponents more cautious when they attack. The American born former Mexican international provides instant experience.

Adrianna Franch- Goalkeeper, Portland Thorns FC

Much like Lynn Williams, Adrianna Franch lived her dream long...

Will We See Some Formalities Or 90 to 120 Minutes of Playoff Drama

New York Red Bulls at Toronto FC

The Red Bulls can attack, create many chances, and Toronto can score off a counterattack to win the series. The game can end like that. A 1-0 goal scored by the Reds late or early can make this game boring.

The question is will New York attack early or hold back to settle for counterattacks. Enough time will disappear that an all-out attack is imminent. An early Red Bulls goal can create self-doubt for Toronto.

Toronto will get on the board and settle their nerves. It could be a classy performance at BMO with an easy win. 3-1 will be the score.

Columbus Crew SC versus New York City FC

New York City can win at home. The problem is when City attack it exposes their defense. New York can score three goals but might give up two.

NYCFC centerbacks Frederic Brilliant and Alexander Callens have to push the line high for City to be an attacking threat. Forwards Jack Harrison and David Villa had to hover over the left side to generate an offense in Columbus. New York’s three shots on goal versus the Crew were anemic.

Washington, A Young, Untamed Spirit + Vegas Soccer Picks

Embed from Getty Images

The Washington Spirit Are Betting Their Young Talent For A Better Season

When NWSL teams exercised their options on players, the Washington Spirit kept 20 players. This team was dead last with a -18 goal difference.

Being in last place wasn’t an indication of bad play. Washington did look promising against Chicago on August 26th. Their reliance on possession to create goals last season was gone, but more speed was there.

The Spirit attacked the right side of Chicago’s defense. Mallory Pugh was a distributor. The target, Cheyna Williams, floated in the middle or left side.

Crosses were made in the box, but with no connections. The Spirit had seven shots with one on target. They did connect these missed shots for five corners versus the Red Stars

Chicago had 35 clearances to in this game. The Spirit could get inside the box. Washington couldn’t string passes to control the pace. They often turnover the balls near the flanks in the middle of the field.

The Chicago gritty defense they made their name off of came out against Washington. The Red Stars had two yellow cards and won 14 tackles. Washington was timid with five....

Seattle vs Whitecaps Pick

Vancouver is not traveling far for the second leg. This is a great advantage for rest against Seattle. Dempsey is back and at the same age, he can't make a 90-minute contribution. Ozzie Alonso is questionable. He will be subbed if Seattle is winning. Vancouver will be content with scoring two goals. The Whitecaps will advance to the Conference Finals tonight by 2-1

These Matches are 180 minutes, or even longer. The First Half Starts Tonight.

Seattle Sounders FC at Vancouver Whitecaps FC

The Sounders don’t have Clint Dempsey, their top scorer. They don’t have Jordan Morris, Seattle’s threat on the outside. Ozzie Alonso, their best defensive player, is out for this semifinal.

The Sounders only had Dempsey and Alonzo coming off the bench to salvage a 1-1 tie in Vancouver on August 23rd. The Whitecaps will have the four days rest disadvantage. It’s believed Sounders are all about team chemistry since the stars are not playing.

Seattle’s chemistry is a factor with more days to rest and train. The Whitecaps have some momentum coming off a big win. The players will say the game is 180 minutes long. They want the aggregate to be over in one match.

The Sounder’s forced the Whitecaps in their defensive third in Vancouver. Nouhou Tolo and Cristian Roldan secured the left to prevent the Whitecaps from attacking. Don’t expect a Vancouver avalanche, we’ll just get some light snow. A 1-1 draw.

Toronto FC at New York Red Bulls

MLS Knockout Round Previews

The MLS Playoffs Starts Today and All the Excitement That Goes With It.

The MLS Knockout Round. It can be more intense than watching the MLS Cup. Four games on Wednesday and Thursday will be high spirited affairs for the supporters and the neutrals that will always get entertaining matches.

Red Bull New York at Chicago Fire

Chicago only lost once at home to Minnesota and two draws against both New York teams. The Fire last played the Red Bulls on September 9th to a 1-1 draw. Chicago played the long ball to get possession in their attacking third, which they kept the ball to create goalscoring chances.

The Fire mostly ran their attack on the right side and relied on set pieces for chances on goal. New York’s only attack in the game came through set pieces. The Red Bulls were often caught offside to create any other attacks.

Chicago was too aggressive when they played New York and gave up set pieces around the penalty box. Fouling near the box and individual errors can give the Red Bulls a chance to win but they won’t.

San Jose Earthquakes at Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Vancouver is not dominated at home. When they do win three or...

Ochs, O'Brien, Could Reenter As Jems.

Embed from Getty Images

Stephani Ochs and Jordan O'Brien Could Be Diamonds in the Reentry Rough.

Eight Players became available to sign in the NWSL Re-Entry Wire on Monday. McKenzie Berryhill and Kendall Johnson are suffering from severe concussion issues. Danish International Line Sigvardsen Jensen torn her ACL at the Women’s Euro Tournament in August and may not be available for the start of next season.

The most famous name, Natasha Kai, is suffering from age and productivity. The United States legend has scored only four goals in two years. Kelly Conheeney made only 13 appearances in two seasons for Houston.

Jocelyn Blankenship was the last Orlando Pride to sign this year and made no appearance for the squad.

The best talent in the Re-entry wire may be Jordan O'Brien and Stephani Ochs. Ochs has experience. She recently made six appearances for North Carolina this season and has been with Canberra United of the Westfield W-League from 2013 to the 2016-17 campaign.

Ochs can play in defense or as a forward. It was difficult for her to get into the Championship Final North Carolina’s line-up. Stephani’s experience and versatility are needed for...

Seattle's Reign From The Outside

Seattle Doesn't Need to Rebuild. The Need A General in Defense.

The Seattle Reign sat on their thrones in first place in 2014 and 2015. In 2016 and 2017, Seattle reclined in 5th place. Seattle has been reigning just below the top four while looking regal.

Seattle is not a team in despair on the field (A Columbus Crew like crisis may happen off the field). Portland and North Carolina managed stability in defense and attack. The Reign’s defense broke last season. Seattle gained three points in their last six games.

The offense keeps in line with the more attacking philosophy most of the teams had this season. Jess Fishlock, Megan Rapinoe, and Katie Johnson tallied the goals for Seattle. Rapinoe’s move from midfield to forward makes the attack free flowing.

Chicago played the Reign on June 28th and commenced to pressuring Seattle in their defensive third. Seattle was about to create an offense on the right flank. The crosses near the mouth of the goal were chances missed and proof of Seattle’s talent.

Chicago’s inability to stop Seattle from attacking the right side gave the Reign liberty to attack the left. The Red Stars’ Long...

In Over Two Hours, All the Tense Games Will Clear The Playoff Air.

All to play for in Major League Soccer. Atlanta, NYCFC, Chicago, and Columbus want the 2nd spot in the Eastern Conference. San Jose and Real Salt Lake just want to be in Western Conference Playoffs.

All of these games became great to watch for the drama. The greatest show on turf will take place for little over two hours on soccer fields in on Sunday afternoon. We’ll be watching in ecstasy or terror as the clock ticks upward.

New York FC vs. Columbus Crew SC

You read the name and feel the emotions about the Crew. It’s obvious the players feel that pain too. NYCFC hasn’t been in matches where three or more goals are scored from both sides. Lately, City likes to hold on to 1-0 wins. The Crew lost with over 3 goals scored between their opponents.

NYCFC should win in a low scoring match.

And if NYCFC wins they will get the 2nd spot outright, but if they don’t………

Atlanta United FC vs. Toronto FC

Atlanta is next in line to get that 2nd spot in the East. They win big at home with over 3 goals scored between both teams. ATL score two or more goals...

Atlanta At Third, Not Second

Atlanta and New York Still Positioning For Better Spots In the Postseason.

Atlanta United would prefer second place. They wouldn’t have to play a mid-week playoff match. ATL can show off their new stadium on a weekend.

Atlanta has trouble getting points on the East Coast. ATL has lost three games and drawn twice traveling up the Atlantic. East coast teams apply physicality to their matches against the Georgia team.

The Philadelphia Union was aggressive at their home match to Atlanta on August 28th, 17 tackles and eight dispossessions to the Southern side. The Union’s aggressiveness cost them a red card and three points turned into one.

Early in the match, Atlanta was free-flowing passing from the flanks into the attacking third. ATL’s concentrated their possession near the left attacking half line. All midfielders for Atlanta occupied the area to create an attack on the left.

The Union was able to make a right cross to Roland Alberg goal for a Philly 1-0 lead. Two Union goals came from the outside. C.J. Sapong became defensive trying to become relevant to the attack.
The Red Bulls don’t have the problem of getting Bradley Wright...

The Thorns vs. Courage: April 22nd

Embed from Getty Images

These Championships Titans Played Before, And It May Be How the Title Game Plays Out.

The Portland Thorns and North Carolina Courage played twice this season. On July 13th Portland had key players missing on international duty. The April 22nd match is a good barometer of how these squads will face each other.

April 22nd is a long time ago. The Thorns and Courage were favorites then. They’re the Championship now.

North Carolina played a 3-5-2 formation, hoping five midfielders can break through Portland’s defense. Stopping the Courage in the midfield has been a tactic keeping them at bay for NWSL teams all season.

The Courage broke through the Portland midfield to counterattack. North Carolina blew by the Thorns connecting passing forward making the Thorns look average. No other team does that except the Courage.

Both teams got to play their matches. Portland set up an organized attack, patiently waiting to make the right pass. The Courage attacked the flanks, passing crosses inside the box.

The match became intense. Two world class squads who didn’t fear each other. The game remained open. The intensity didn’t hold up the match.

Portland held...

Dallas Can't Dilly Dally In Seattle

The Toro's Are Tailspinning Once Again. Can They Pull Up In Seattle?

Dallas does this. The Toro’s have looked attractive since Schellas Hyndman last year as manager. Usually, halfway in the season, FC Dallas self-destructs.

We saw this recently last year in the Western Conference Semifinal against the Sounders. It took two games for Dallas to crash and burn. They can gather themselves up at Centruylink where Dallas was MLS Cup favorites when they last went to Seattle.

The North Texas club couldn’t win out west, three draws, and three losses. They lost close to the Pacific at Portland and in Los Angeles. The games were limited two to three goals scored by both teams.

Dallas failed to score versus Seattle in Frisco. The absence of Jordan Morris gave the Toro’s an ability to create an offense from the right side where 46 percent of the attack was taken place. The liberty of attacking from the right side made Seattle focus on that space. FC Dallas simply attacked from the left with ease.

The Sounders attacked from the left side, 42 percent of the offense came from that area. Seattle did attempt to create an offense on the right. ...

The Courage to Conquer

North Carolina Are No Underdogs. They Left That in Western New York

The North Carolina Courage is more discipline than the 2016 Western New York Flash. The Courage wasn’t as dominate scoring like their outstanding 2.25 goals per game last season. This season’s 1.58 goals per game are still rather impressive.

North Carolina's defense is the reason why they are poised to become repeat champions. In 2016, the Courage allowed 1.50 goals a game. North Carolina lowered that average to 0.92 goals a game.

The Courage offensive philosophy is still to make attacking runs and use set pieces to stay in their attacking third. A new dimension being adding is using possession starting in the back to maneuver up front.

North Carolina’s steady possession worked against the Chicago Red Stars on September 3rd. The Red Stars won but the Courage got the first goal. The goal was a breakaway with Jessica McDonald and Lynn Williams showing their speed and power.

The Courage played a 4-2-3-1 but morphed into a 4-3-3 to penetrate Chicago’s midfield. Lynn Williams played in a right midfield role to have more space to create for herself.

First Place Vancouver Can Show The East Coast Why They're The Best

Vancouver is the best in the Western Conference and no one cares. Their prime time match in New York will show the East Coast viewers an entertaining, attacking team. Let’s hope the scoring won’t be low. The last time the Whitecaps travel close to the Atlantic they lost to New England 1-0.

In the August 12th match, Vancouver gave away too many free kicks to the Revolution. The New York Red Bulls thrive on set pieces. The Red Bull’s game plan would be to slow down the Whitecaps’ attack.

New England had speed on the flanks to make Vancouver defend more. New York can’t match the Whitecaps speed for speed. The Red Bulls will defend the sideline. They will feed the ball in the middle to Kljestan and Wright Phillips to create goal scoring opportunities.

Against the Revs, the Whitecaps had four players in their attacking half at all times. They mostly defended New England’s attackers. The only a constituent attacking option New York has is Wright-Phillips.

A Red Bulls match is a show for the neutrals either by their comebacks or collapses. This always cost them...

The Pride Must Rise or Fall

The Orlando Pride, Despite the Position, are Built to Will It All.

Orlando Pride can score their way into a championship. The 2016 Western New York Flash did. The Flash was built through a great draft and trades. Orlando has money.

They are not underdogs. A pride is a group of lions. They were built to rule.

Orlando’s accomplishment of just getting to the postseason shouldn’t be celebrated. Most of the starters are household names in women’s soccer homes. The franchise is staying in Orlando.

The similarities between the 2016 Flash and the Pride are in their reliance of scoring multiple goals. A one-nil win won’t do. Both defenses were shaky.

Western New York’s defense was just a mediocre group. Orlando premiere defenders in Ali Krieger and Camila are capable of attacking. Their sweeper abilities lead to quick attacks.

The Pride’s September 8th match against Seattle is an example of Orlando’s talent put to playoff environment. Orlando did play the Thorns on September 23rd. The intensity of survival wasn’t in that game.

Orlando and Seattle was a duel for the last playoff spot. The 1-1 draw was an exciting, end-to-end...
