Vanessa Rico Fernandez (2-3) of Alicante, Spain has her eyes set on making it to the big leagues of WMMA. Fighting out of Fisico Marcial, Fernandez fights professionally within the atomweight division and is working to put her name on the map with the goal to earn a slot to fight for Invicta MMA.

Fernandez’ athletic background boasts significant accolades within the sports of wrestling and Judo. Her strength and physical stature make her a competitive opponent within her division. But her striking has evolved tremendously, and coupled with her strength makes for a lethal combination.

“I consider myself a wrestler, but I have hard striking,” says Fernandez. “I bring strength and experience and a lot of heart.”

Fernandez’ solid base with Judo at the top level has made for an ideal platform to step into the sport of MMA. Her training camps have developed her to become a well-rounded MMA fighter and continue to work to improve her game.

“I started out with relying heavily on my Judo, but now I can say that I have a complete MMA skillset,” says Fernandez. “In my last fight with Kyra Batara I was able to take her to the canvas twice with my fists alone.”

At 37 years old, Fernandez remains to force to be reckoned with, maintaining top physical condition and training out of numerous camps both in and out of Spain.

“My age is not a bad factor for me,” explains...

Amanda Nunes vs Valentina Shevchenko 2 is just days away from closing the cage door for the highly anticipated rematch at UFC 215. The two fought for the main card of UFC 196 in a grueling three round bout that resulted in a win by decision for Nunes.
Since then, Nunes has taken the belt and the women’s Bantamweight Division by storm, effectively retiring two of the division’s greats: Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate.
The hard-hitting Brazilian has relocated to Coconut Beach, Florida to permanently train with American Top Team, which has undoubtedly contributed to her surge to the top within the division.
However, there is no greater threat than the only woman to have gone the distance with Nunes in the UFC octagon: Valentina Shevchenko. This factor alone could swing the advantage to Shevchenko if the fight moves into the championship rounds.
Shevchenko, a 17 time Muay Thai world champion, is known for her grit and laser-focus on the fight game. Her dangerous striking and ability to endure significant damage makes her the ideal contender for the title. With her current momentum of wins of Holly Holm and Julianna Pena, Shevchenko won’t stop until the belt is hers.
In their last bout, Shevchenko proved not only that she could withstand Nunes on both the feet and the ground, but that she is a legitimate threat to win. That same threat will be carried into the cage on Saturday...

Current UFC Flyweight Champion, Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson (26-2-1), is set to take on Flyweight title contender, Ray “The Tazmexican Devil” Borg (11-2) on Saturday, September 9th for UFC 215. The Vegas odds have taken a stance heavily in favor of Johnson (-1200) for the win over Borg (+800)*, breaking the current UFC record for the most consecutive title defenses.
Johnson- who was criticized for opting to fight Borg over TJ Dilashaw for the Flyweight Title- is likely to earn yet another win in a successful attempt to make UFC history. Borg, however, is certain to put up a fight for his chance to shock the world by defeating Johnson in the five round championship title bout

FIGHT PREDICTION
The fight is likely to open at a quick pace dictated by Borg as he pushes forward to create openings for the takedown. Johnson’s sharp and dynamic striking game will gain Borg’s respect quickly, keeping him at bay for the majority of the first round. Johnson’s game is quite literally everywhere, which may lead him to welcome the takedown and will result in a demonstration of Johnson’s savage jiu-jitsu skills.
Borg is known for his takedowns and with a slight size advantage over Johnson; it is likely that Johnson could be the first to initiate the attempts in an effort to maintain control. Fans should also expect to see Johnson throw in takedown attempts of his own...

Ian Pomfret is a 21-year-old amateur mixed martial artist from Indianapolis, Indiana who is currently fighting at 170 Lbs.
He is ready to go the full 10 rounds.

[Q: You are 1-0 as an amateur, how do you feel your first fight went?]

Ian: I feel my first fight went well. I was prepared for a war and I feel I won across the board 30-27. It was a split decision victory my way. I was fighting a known home town fighter and I believe that somewhat swayed the judge's decision.

I’ve wrestled my whole life and competed in BJJ tournaments, so I knew the adrenaline feeling and how to deal with it. I felt I was in control most of the fight but I also feel I should have opened up more. But because it was my first bout, my coaches told me to stick to the basics in this fight and get my first win.

My coaches also didn't want me to exploit a lot of my game in my first fight. The fighter I fought was talented on the ground and had a slick leg lock game, so they wanted me to keep it standing to force him to strike with me. I also wanted to show that I’m a complete fighter, not just a wrestler or BJJ. I decided where that fight went.

[Q: What made you want to become a fighter?]

Ian: When I was 12 years old...
